CHAMPIONING THE BEST OF MODERN DESIGN IN HARMONY WITH ITS HERITAGE AND SURROUNDINGS
Cadogan commissioned an international competition to find an inspiring design for a new café building to enhance the character of the Square. Applications were received from around 150 architects’ practices from across the world and six designs were short-listed. These proposals were showcased at a public exhibition and Nex Architecture’s sleek, coiled building with retractable glass walls and roof terrace was the winner.
This new building includes an innovative glass facade which will lower into a single storey basement during fine weather – the first of its kind anywhere in the UK. It also includes a circular roof terrace, open to the public as an additional green space to relax, overlooking the ‘running track’ famed as Roger Banister’s training ground for the four minute mile.
The new café will be crafted from high-quality materials creating a flexible space that merges inside and outside for year round use.
Offering enhanced amenity to local residents and attracting a wide range of visitors to the area, the café will be independently run and will create a unique space from which visitors can rest, seek refreshment and enjoy the views.
